Raphael Bellum PLLC’s attorneys have extensive experience in patent prosecution, trademark prosecution, licensing, portfolio management, and client counseling.  Our attorneys represent clients on patent and trademark matters before the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) and coordinate foreign prosecution in countries throughout the world.

As chemists, biologists, biotechnologists, and engineers ourselves, we understand the unique challenges that our clients face.  We combine that with our years of legal and business experience to support our clients in all areas.

Approximately half of the firm’s work focuses on the chemical, biotech and pharmaceutical industries, including pending patent applications covering a wide range of subjects such as catalysts, biomolecules, polymers, small molecule active pharmaceutical ingredients (API’s), and pharmaceutical formulations.  The firm has a further unique focus in the pharmaceutical arts relating to patent applications for solid-state forms of API’s, including polymorphs, co-crystals, and amorphous dispersions.  The balance of the firm’s patent work focuses on engineering, computer software, and design patents.

The firm’s trademark prosecution practice focuses on counseling and guiding clients through the entire trademark process, from initial consultation and clearance searches, thorough application strategy and interactions with the USPTO, and ultimately to successful registration.  In addition to enjoying a strong track record of obtaining federal registrations for its clients’ marks, the firm maintains, monitors, and enforces trademark rights on their behalf.

In addition to its patent and trademark prosecution practice, the firm has active practices in other areas of intellectual property, including patent portfolio management and due diligence, freedom-to-operate, patent non-infringement, and invalidity opinions, licensing, and litigation support.  Building on the extensive patent law experience and technical backgrounds of its attorneys, the firm prides itself on top quality work and superior client relationships.  But it is not just our experience that sets us apart from other firms.  We are known for combining sound experience with insight and imagination to bring creativity and enthusiasm to the work we do for our clients.  We believe that just as originality and innovation are the hallmarks of intellectual property and patents, those attributes are ingredients for success and for satisfying work – for clients and the firm.

A significant portion of Raphael Bellum’s client base is made up of universities, research institutions, start-ups, and emerging companies.  For example, the University of Virginia, Western University of Health Sciences, and North Dakota State University all are current clients of the firm.  The firm also represents numerous start-up companies in all areas of technology, and particularly in the pharmaceutical and biotechnology fields.  The firm also works with several clients that are developing artificial intelligence in these areas.  Our work in this area involves not only preparing and filing patent applications but also building an international Intellectual Property portfolio and proceeding through due diligence, financing, and licensing.
